Animation Block Party 2022

Nineteenth annual Animation Block Party is August 12-13. The Opening Night Celebration drops at Union Hall on August 12th and the fest continues at BAM Film on August 13th.

Tickets are on sale at doors to screenings at BAM Film, located at 30 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, and you can buy individual tickets in advance at the BAM website!

Animation Block Party 2022 broadcasts from BAM Film all day on Saturday, August 13th with four incredible programs. Saturday matinee is a 2pm Animation Block Summer Mix, Volume One. At 4pm is Malt Adult Presents Barber Westchester. The 6pm program highlights Animation Block Summer Mix, Volume Two. Closing the night at 8pm is Chicago 10.

Program 2  -  4:00pm

malt adult presents barber westchester (2022)

Barber Westchester is a stunning independent feature by the prolific animator Jonni Phillips, making its New York theatrical debut at BAM. The film centers on Barber navigating family life, a cult preacher dad, and complicated friendships while getting an internship at NASA only to find out that space is fake.

Phillips will be appearing at the screening in conversation with Malt Adult founder, Sarah Schmidt.

Program 4  -  8:00 pm

chicago 10 (2007)

Chicago 10 is an animated documentary about the Chicago Eight, who were charged by the federal government with various charges related to anti-war and countercultural protests during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

The film was directed by Brett Morgan, and the crew is a who’s who of animation legends, from Dan Haskett to Doug Crane to Tissa David.


SATURDAY NIGHT AT DSK BROOKLYN!

Animation Block presents Cartoons On Film Rubber Hose Retrospective

At DSK Brooklyn, located at 710 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11217.

Animation historian Tommy José Stathes of Cartoons On Film joins Animation Block Party to host a Saturday evening screening of early rubber hose cartoons. 

FREE event features genuine 16mm projection, using rare archival prints from Stathes' personal archive. 

Some of the shorts to be screened will include:

  • Alice the Whaler (Ub Iwerks, 1927)

  • The Mechanical Cow (Ub Iwerks, 1927)

  • Felix Woos Whoopee (Otto Messmer, 1930)

  • Minnie's Yoo Hoo (Ub Iwerks, 1930)

  • Toby the Milkman (Dick Huemer, 1931)

...among others.

Rubber Hose” was a curving motion style that became an aesthetic industry standard in early 20th century animation.


The 2022 award categories are Audience Award, Best in Show and Original Design.
