Animation Block Party opens with an 8pm Friday Night Feature at BAM Film, located at 30 Lafayette Ave Brooklyn, NY 11217.

The ABP Friday Night Feature is Tokyo Godfathers (2003) directed by Satoshi Kon.


8:00 pm - Tokyo Godfathers (2003)

August 18th at 8pm. Directed by Satoshi Kon / Japan / 92 min.

Satoshi Kon is one of the most influential anime directors of all-time and his third film, Tokyo Godfathers, is considered by many to be his best.

A work of twisted realism following a homeless trio of friends, an alcoholic named Gin, teen runaway, Miyuki and trans heroine, Hana.

On Christmas Eve, they discover a newborn and set out to find the baby’s parents.

Kon’s film was inspired by the John Ford live-action feature, 3 Godfathers.

Animation Block Party continues on Saturday, August 19th with four animation programs. 2pm slot is Animation Block Party Shorts Program One. At 4pm, the Sublo and Tangy Mustard Retrospective. 6pm show is Animation Block Party Shorts Program Two. 8pm show features Malt Adult NYC.

Saturday Night Party with Picture This live animated comedy takes place at Union Hall, located at 702 Union St, Brooklyn, NY 11215.

Program One of this summer’s eclectic Animation Block Party festival mix with a focus on student films and local works. 


4:00 pm - Sublo & tangy mustard retrospective (2015-2023)

August 19th at 4pm. Directed by Aaron Long / Canada / 65 min

Canadian animation filmmaker Aaron Long’s comically profound indie series Sublo and Tangy Mustard has clocked an enormous view count on YouTube. The retrospective will take a look at the fast food mascot cartoon duo and the creator behind them.

Aaron Long will be joined by fellow BoJack and Tuca & Bertie animation director, Mike Hollingsworth, for a post-screening Q&A.

Ryan Long, voice of Sublo, and Kevin Doan, voice of Tangy Mustard, will also be available for the BAM Film discussion.

Program Two features award-winning international shorts, experimental and design centric films and music videos.

August 19th at 8pm. Various Directors.

Sarah Schmidt, curator host of Chicago based screening series Malt Adult, has been participating in Animation Block Party since 2016 and will be appearing to showcase her favorite NYC adjacent animators.

Malt Adult’s goal is to bring contemporary, independent animation to the Midwest and beyond.

Screening includes a Q&A with the Malt Adult NYC filmmakers.

Animation Block Party concludes with two matinee feature films on Sunday, August 20th at BAM Film, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11217.

At 2pm, Triplets of Belleville in 35mm film and the 4pm show is Tommy Stathes Presents The Cartoon Carnival Documentary.


2:00 pm - Triplets of Belleville (2003)

August 20th at 2pm. Directed by Sylvain Chomet / France / 80 minutes.

French animation director and comic writer, Sylvain Chomet’s Oscar nominated feature length debut was a sensation in 2003 and will be screened in pristine 35mm film at Animation Block’s Sunday matinee special. 

This modern classic follows Madame Souza and her dog as they team up with the Belleville Sisters, a 30s song-and-dance team, to save her grandson, who has been kidnapped by the French mafia during the Tour de France.


4:00 pm - Tommy Stathes Presents The Cartoon Carnival Documentary (2021)

August 20th at 4pm. Directed by Andrew T. Smith / United Kingdom / 90 minutes.

Directed by United Kingdom based producer, Andrew T. Smith, the Cartoon Carnival documentary tells the story of the pioneering days of the art-form, chronicling a preservationist's quest to rescue pre-sound cartoons from obscurity. 

The film stars Animation Block alumni Jerry Beck and Howard Beckerman. Screening will be hosted by animation historian, Tommy Stathes, who also appears in the documentary.
